Cynarae scolymus (Globe artichoke)

Cynara vinagrella - Artischocke - Bionorica As a vegetable the Globe artichoke has been known for thousands of years and is still popular today, especially in Mediterranean countries. The artichoke was mentioned for the first time in Egypt around 500 B.C. and is now widespread in Southern Europe, Northern Africa and South and North America.

The strong, thistle-like perennial from the composite family can grow up to two meters high. It consists of large and jagged, pinnately divided leaves and a flower head perched on a fleshy stem.

The medicinal effect of artichokes, whose constituents stimulate the appetite and digestion, has been known for a long time and has been sufficiently researched. While many extracts are obtained from the dried leaves, the pressed juices from all parts of the fresh plant growing aboveground contain herbal ingredients that are effective raw materials for pharmaceuticals and dietary supplements.
Bitter compounds such as hydroxycinnamic acid, cynarine and flavonoids are effective in promoting bile secretion and stimulating liver metabolism.
