Matricaria recutita (German chamomile)

Matricaria recutita - Kamille - Bionorica Chamomile has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries, and its therapeutic effect has been proven in many scientific studies. The wildflowers grow easily and are thus very widespread. The typical daisy-like white-yellow flowers begin to bloom in May. Medicinal chamomile differs from the other species because of its hollow receptacle. Another characteristic property is the pleasant scent.

This medicinal plant, or more specifically the flower heads, has a wide range of therapeutic uses. Chamomile has an anti-inflammatory effect; it eases muscle tension and reduces pain. It protects mucous membranes and promotes wound healing. Chamomile has also been shown to be active against bacteria and fungi. Its essential oil is mainly responsible for these positive effects. The chamazulene and α-bisabolol in the essential oil have an anti-inflammatory effect. The latter also inhibits pepsin secretion in the stomach. Further active herbal ingredients with positive effects are the flavonoids, and especially flavonoid apigenin.

Chamomile is used to treat skin problems like eczema and inflammations of the mucous membrane. For example, it has proved to be a successful therapy for acute and chronic inflammations of the mouth and gums, as in tonsilitis. Chamomile is also used as a household remedy for other ailments. It eases nervous tension and relieves the symptoms of gastrointestinal diseases. To sooth painful complaints of the rectum, such as hemorrhoids, or of the genitalia, sitz baths with chamomile extracts are recommended.
