Vitis vinifera (European Grapevine)

The European grapevine, Vitis vinifera purpurea, with its bright red leaves is mainly cultivated in the dry regions of central and southern Europe, the Near East, Australia, New Zealand and Central, South and the western coast of North America. The leaves have three to five lobes, and their undersurface is bristly. When the leaves appear in spring, they are green and gradually turn deep red during the summer. The flowers are arranged in dense panicles, which develop into grapes in late summer.
It is primarily the red leaves of the Vitis vinifera purpurea that are used for medicinal purposes. They are usually gathered after the grape harvest, when the concentration of effective herbal ingredients is at its highest. The most important constituents are the flavonoids, which have an anti-inflammatory effect and help fight water retension. They are also known to seal blood capillaries and improve the elasticity of blood vessels. Red vine leaves also contain a relatively high concentration of anthocyanins.
Extracts of red vine leaves are used to treat weak veins and chronic vein insufficiency (CVI). They help relieve painful, swollen and heavy legs, promote blood circulation and fight water retension (edema). Red vine leaves can also slow down the development of varicose veins.
